Instagram Inspiration #MommyAndMe

In the world of social media, nothing is more #instagrammable than a good Mommy and Me outfit. Matching with your little one is fun for them and provides a picture-perfect moment for you. A quick scroll through #MommyAndMe on Instagram shows several different types of Mommy and Me looks- ranging from comfy to casual to chic. Which one is right for you? What occasion is best for Mommy and Me outfits? Is there a way to do the Mommy and Me trend in your actual everyday life? Let’s take a look at the different ways you can achieve the Mommy and Me look and where you can actually use them in your life.

Matching or Connected T-Shirts

This is a super easy and convenient way to match your little one. You can find tons of styles and designs online, especially on Etsy. They’re sold together as a set so you don’t have to spend endless hours looking for items that match or coordinate in adult and children’s sizes. One purchase, two shirts, so easy. And since it’s just a tee for each of you, you can dress it up or down however you want- you can match perfectly with the same style of pants and hair or you can just let the tees work together and dress yours up, while letting your little have an outfit that is comfortable and play-friendly.

This way of coordinating is great for making a day spent together- even if all you do is run errands or lounge around the house (keep on social distancing!)- extra special for your little one.

THe PErfect Match

There are a few websites that make outfits in the same fabric for both mom and daughter. This is a great option for official family photos or a family resort vacation. For example, Lilly Pulitzer has tons of options for matching- dresses in the same fabric, shorts sets, playsuits, swimwear. Other online retailers also sell matching outfits for mom and daughter, and they are really easy to find by searching “Mommy and Me” on Pinterest or Instagram.

Another easy way to accomplish the Perfect Match with your little is to choose basics that are easy to find in both adult and children’s sizes, such as a solid color top and a denim jacket or jeans and a plain shirt. By styling these basics with the same elements as your little- like both wearing headbands in your hair or both wearing your hair in the same style- you can make it more obvious that the two of you are matching on purpose rather than both just wearing basic items.

The Color Coordinate

Thank you Kylie and Stormi (and all the Kar-Jenners, for that matter) for making this a trend! A cute way to match with your little one without wearing exactly the same items is to choose a color palette and find items that are similar to each other but not the same in those colors and materials. This is an easier option when your little is still too little to fit the available sizes in most Mommy and Me outfits. It’s also nice to be able to maintain your own personal style while coordinating with the outfits that are practical for a baby or toddler to wear all day. This is how I choose to coordinate with my little girl most often actually.

My daughter was still in newborn sizes around the holiday season and I wanted our first family outing to be in coordinated looks (because I’m annoying like that)- I was having a lot of trouble finding things that would match. So I found an adorable holiday dress from Target for her which was burgundy velvet, and bought her black accessories to go with it, then I bought a burgundy top and black velvet skirt for myself. It was obvious we were matching, but not in exactly the same outfit. Then, of course, in the fog of having a newborn at a family function, I never actually managed to get a good picture of us together in our outfits, so that was a bummer. But it has inspired me to plan out more cute coordinated mommy and me looks for us!

In general, matching with your kid is a fun and special thing to do and when they look back at family photos later they can hopefully enjoy the thought you put into dressing up with them. But also, you worked hard to make that baby! You totally deserve to have adorable Instagram moments with them, so it’s completely okay if you want to dress your kid to match you just because it’s something you want.
